What an impactful two days at ATMO MAC Summit x TU Berlin this week! Together with TU Berlin, we welcomed leading experts, innovators, and decision-makers to dive deep into the future of natural refrigerants for mobile air conditioning, heat pumps, and transport refrigeration.
A huge THANK YOU to our sponsors, speakers, and attendees from 70 organisations for their contribution and support in making this event a success!
In case you couldn’t make it this time, you will find below some key takeaways and useful links:
Key highlights and insights
If you weren’t able to join us this year, here’s a summary of some important takeaways from the summit:
- Real competition between propane and CO₂ is emerging across more segments and sectors—including cars, buses, reefers—driving innovation and advancing the industry.
- Volkswagen is expanding its range of models with CO₂ systems. Currently, 1 million CO₂ heat pumps are used in EVs. The company continues to explore ways to make these systems more cost-effective and efficient.
- Ford presented its timeline for propane secondary loop systems for global application.
- China is the world’s leading EV market. It will ban R134a in MAC systems in 2029. The expectation is that Chinese OEMs and suppliers will switch to propane and CO₂ systems before that date.
- Hanon Systems is market leader with CO₂ today, providing 1 million e-compressors to the MEB platform to date. It presented its latest work on R290 secondary loop system, announcing product launch target of 2029.
- In the bus sector, 50% of electric buses in Europe are being fitted with CO₂ heat pumps. An alternative R290 heat pump was also presented.
- ATMOsphere presented a TFA emissions model to measure the effectiveness of the current EU PFAS draft regulation. Presenting several scenarios and applying it to the MAC sector. TFA emissions from mobile air conditioning are set to increase by a minimum of 600% in 2050 vs 2015 levels.
